Muslimah Style: Ghaida

Reader's Contribution

Muslimah Style: Ghaida

Assalamualaikum, I'm Ghaida and I come from Bandung, Indonesia. I'm a 21 year old student (I'm studying for a bachelors degree in Physics), and I am married and expecting a baby soon InshaAllah. I am a business woman, fashion designer and the owner of the boutique GDa'S Gallery. Physics is my favourite science, but fashion is my hobby and I love everything about creativity, colour and style. I love to make designs for casual dresses, skirts and wedding gowns (for me and my customers) and most of my clothes are designed by myself. I get really happy when I see hijabis looking fashionable but still modest.

My Style

I like experimenting. I always try to look different day by day. Actually I don't have a fixed style - it might be vintage or classic, but it depends on my mind, mood and inspiration. My inspiration comes from everything, for example when I am browsing the Internet, blogwalking, or even just when I meet a grandmother at the supermarket. I love to observe and watch how people style themselves and it can also be my inspiration.

I like mixing and matching colours. Usually, my style consists of 2 or 3 colours, my favourite being pink. But I never wear the same colour head-to-toe, it's too matchy-matchy. I also love doing DIY projects. So, if I look at my old clothes, and I'm not interested in wearing them anymore, I try to remake them for a different look. For example we can add some new details or accessories, or just cut randomly as we want, we don't have to be a professional tailor to do that. You just need some sewing skills, and it's really fun! So, to get the best style, we don't have to buy any new clothes, but we can remake old ones. And also, it can encourage us to be more creative day by day.

My favourite clothes are dresses and skirts! I try to always wear them for every occasion. I like being cute, girly and feminine. I love to wear a clothes in different way, such as wearing a skirt as a dress, wearing hijab as a scarf, and many more! I also really appreciate handmade things which are limited edition. I don't mind if the price is quite expensive, because I imagine how long it took to make it by hand, and I think the producer deserves it.

Top Tips

I always try to wear the most comfortable clothes, with the weather, season and occasion being my considerations. So our homework is how to be stylish yet wear comfy clothes.

Making over our old clothes is a good way for us to save money, increase our creativity and get a different new look!

It's really good if someone can inspire us, but never let us be exactly like them!

When you go to a store, it's be better to invest in simple clothes first. If I have a lot of simple items, then I go to the next step: don't be afraid to buy unique, colourful, modest clothes. Just believe when you go home, you can mix and match it and make a great style!

The key to style is: be confident but don't be arrogant. Remember that style is not everything, it's just a way to express ourselves. Stay fashionable but modest!

Muslimah Style: Munira

Reader's Contribution

Muslimah Style: Munira

Salam, I'm Munira, and I'm a 20 year old student currently studying Architecture in Malaysia. I love all things creative, like art, poetry and photography. You can find some of my humble attempts at art here.

My Style

I'm not really interested in fashion per se, I'm more interested in style. Personal style, the way people express themselves :)

My style is really a mix of things that inspire me, and that can come from history books, films, National Geographic magazines, art and random people.

I like to have fun while dressing, depending on my mood. But several things remain constant: comfort is very important and I hate ironing clothes. So most of my clothes are non-fussy pieces I can just throw on in the morning un-ironed, because I'm lazy like that :p

I also like to wear sneakers, even with skirts.

I like to mix and match. Sometimes I'd wear a very grunge jacket with a long flowing skirt; I like the contrast. They actually complement each other well. I guess it suits my personality, I'm not exactly the most feminine girl, but I like wearing feminine skirts. Another thing about mixing and matching is, I prefer simple pieces. I don't really like pieces that have too many blings and trims. But those simple pieces I mix and match with other pieces and accessories, to create different looks according to my mood.

Most important of all, while I like to experiment with my style, I always make sure it is modest and covering, yet distinctly me :)

Top Tips

I know you've heard it many times before, but just be comfortable and be yourself! Nothing can beat the beauty of someone being comfortable and confident in their own skin. Trends are exactly that: just trends, they come and go. But your personal style will go a long way.

Another thing is to mix and match. One piece can go a long way. You can wear the same piece for several days in a row, but if you mix and match, people would hardly even notice that it's the same piece just worn differently! The next time you feel that itch to go shopping after seeing some spectacular outfits online or in magazines, look in your closet. There is bound to be some pieces you haven't worn for quite a while. Finding an old piece and giving it a new twist gives me a better feeling than buying a new one.

And my one addiction is scarves. Because scarves are cheap and they can transform a whole outfit. A scarf is not just an accessory that completes an outfit, it is a crowning piece of clothing of its own that makes an outfit.

Muslimah Style: Ayesha

My name is Ayesha and I am 18 years old. I am originally from London, England and now currently live in Alberta, Canada. I am a freshman at university, studying International Business.

My Style

I have no particular "style", only because I wear mainstream clothing from high-end shops. I wear an outfit according to my mood, and I make sure it looks polished and presentable. I absolutely adore colours and try to wear as many as possible! I am conscious about clothes showing off my shape too much, so I tend to buy more looser, longer items. Layering clothes is one thing I always do. It helps me to keep warm because I'm one of those people who are always cold, and also because it looks fabulous. I take inspiration from celebrities, magazines, street style and try to apply it to my own outfits while still dressing like 'me'. And of course, a girl can never have too many accessories! It jazzes up an outfit and can make a statement saying you're original, unique, and can pull off anything!

What I personally love about wearing the hijab is that you can do so many different styles and express yourself, while still being modest. There's only so much you could do with your hair, but with hijab, the possibilities are endless. Of course that's only the bonus, the main thing is obeying Allah's rule and being proud of being a Muslimah! My hijab style also is influenced by all the different nationalities other Muslim women come from that I see at school, work, in down town, etc. Right now I'm really digging the Turkish and Egyptian style. I experiment with a lot of looks from Lebanon because of all my Lebanese friends. It's weird to say, but I find that trying to be more multicultural in the way I dress is really inspiring me to do my degree in international business. I love to be part of something new every now and then, and that truly is expressed through how I dress.

I'm a jeans type of gal. It's something that will never go out of style (depending on which jean style of course), and living in a place like Canada, it's all people wear really. I'm also a huge bargain shopper! (yes, when I come to London... it's all about PRIMARK!!!) H&M, Urban Behavior and Sirens is just naming a few places I shop at. Since my clothes are so mainstream and 'common', I'm determined to try the whole vintage look from those cute little boutiques in down town. Although first impressions count for everything, I don't dress to impress other people. I dress to please myself, to make me feel more confident in the world, and to be creative and whimsical. Have fun, love yourself, and FEEL GOOD in what you wear!

Top Tips

1) Always, and I say ALWAYS have an turban/bandana/bone/underpiece inside your hijab! It prevents your hijab from slipping and has a clean, neat look.

2) Long sleeve shirts for us hijabis is like having the latest Windows software for nerds! It's a must! (btw, i fall into the nerd category too, so no harm meant.) You can pair any shirt you want with a longsleeve and it looks super cute when worn with a maxi dress.

3) Allah has made the world so beautiful, so appreciate it with wearing the colours he has created. You can look beautiful in other colours besides black!

4) Only wear what makes you feel comfortable and pretty. If you hate the way you look in something, it will make you feel crap all day (trust me!)

We Have a Winner!

Congratulations to Miriam A from Sydney, Australia for winning the January Giveaway!

The question was: "Who is your favourite Muslimah fashion designer, and why?"

And the winning entry:

My favourite Muslimah designer would have to be Sarah Elenany because her products are clearly the work of an intellectual, clever and proud British Muslim woman. Her unique pieces are mind-blowingly attractive but yet so modest, a difficult balance to strike in the Western fashion world. Street gear consisting of pieces like loose pants and long jackets adorned with bold Islamically inspired graphics like minarets are her trademark.

What distinguishes her clothing from other Islamic design houses is that they really seem to scream “I love doing my own thing and my faith is everything to me,” allowing them to bring the best out of an assertive, rather than passive Muslim woman. It is this very attitude which makes Sarah’s work attractive to non muslims alike, making her work an excellent source of dawah mashallah.

Sarah is truly special as a designer because she experienced first hand the frustration of young Muslim women struggling to dress within Islamic guidelines while still keeping up with the latest trends, and instead of complaining, actually did something about it. May Allah reward her and put barakah in her work, she is truly an inspiration for young Muslimahs that want to leave a positive mark on the planet.

Keep an eye out for lots more fantastic giveaways coming your way very soon!

Muslimah Style: Amela
My name is Amela and I am 24 years old. Originally I am a Bosnian, but living in Australia for 15 years now. I am a student at the Australian College of Applied Psychology and I am studying Counselling/Pyschology. I am married and expecting a baby soon InshaAllah, which I know will bring happiness into mine and my husbands life. I have began wearing the hijab in March 2008 and I have to say it is one of the most challenging and rewarding things I have done so far.

My Style

My style is combined with a little bit of everything. I like to combine different covering styles and colours to make my own look at times. I tend to buy outfits that are most comfortable for me to wear. I love maxi dresses and long skirts, I have many colours that I always match with the scarf/shawl. I choose to go shopping at Islamic shops and the average shops as you can always find nice bargains on long tops, tunics, and even shorter dresses that can be worn with pants underneath and a long sleeved top to cover the arms.

I always wear 2 bonnets that can be matched with what I am wearing as it really brings out the personality in me, as I love bright colours. I also like to use trims on my bonnets at times when I am attending a special event as it looks more glamorous.

My must have to complete my look is a little bit of accessorizing, I like to go simple on the necklaces, earrings and bangles as it can just add a little touch of colour and excitement to any outfit. The necklaces I wear are usually long ones that aren't too tight around the neck.

Top Tip

My top tip is to always accessorize and wear minimal make up if the colours you are wearing are very bright and "out there". Keep it natural so that the whole outfit is still decent and fashionable.

Making Headway on the Runway

Fendi Fall 2009

It's always great to see runway interpretations of head coverings, especially when they provide us hijabis with little style tips! I love these loose hoods by Fendi, which look really classy draped over velvet headbands. And they're easy to adapt to hijab - just add a polo-neck top, and pin the hood to a bonnet cap underneath for full hair coverage. You could also try sliding in a pretty hair grip or clip into the cap to recreate this chic look.

The Hijabi Guide to Jeans

Possibly the most frustrating shopping experience for any woman is that of having a buy a pair of jeans. And when you're a hijabi, that frustration is likely to be ten times greater! With pretty much every clothing retailer selling their own line of denim, it takes wading through hundreds of pairs of jeans in various cuts and washes to find the perfect pair. Looser styles have been on the catwalks for several seasons, and are now easily found on the high street.

The cuts that are generally available tend to be skinny, straight-leg, bootcut, flare, boyfriend and wide leg, with some variations in between. If you are looking for jeans to wear with hijab, you need to make sure that the cut is loose enough to reasonably conceal the shape of the legs. This means ruling out anything labelled 'skinny'. The 3 styles that I have found to be appropriate, largely depending on body type and the length of top worn, are bootcut, boyfriend and wide leg.

Here are my tried-and-tested tips for finding your pair of hijab-friendly jeans:

1. This goes for most items of clothing, but always, always try the jeans on in store. Try to do this at a time when you're not too rushed; it's best to dedicate a shopping trip just for jeans. Make sure they are comfortable enough to walk, sit and kneel in.

2. Take heels/flats to determine whether the length of the jeans is appropriate for what shoes you will wear them with. The hem of the jeans should just about cover the whole of the shoe for the most flattering fit.

3. Avoid jeans with a very large flare, or those with embellishments and a faded colour wash. Darker washes are more slimming than lighter ones and are also great for dressing up.

4. A tailored pair of jeans are always more flattering than very baggy, slouchy styles, which tend to look messy when paired with long tops.

5. High-waisted styles are better for those with fuller figures as they comfortably 'pull' your stomach and hips in, rather than low-slung jeans which dig into hips to give that muffin-top look.

One of the best places to buy jeans on the high street, in my opinion, is Dorothy Perkins. This is because they stock plenty of loose, wide leg and boyfriend fit styles, which all come in short, regular and longer lengths. Their Denim Fit Guide also allows you to view the jeans on a model in 3D. I would advise shopping around to find the best fit for you - Debenhams and House of Fraser stock a range of brands which are worth trying out.

If you have any other tips for buying jeans, share them with us in the comments section!

Muslimah Style: Yasmin

My name is Yasmin, 20 years old, I am a senior in college studying early childhood education, inshallah will be teaching kindergarten in September. I am from the US.

My Style

When I go shopping, I look for cute, hijab friendly items. I try to find things that are versatile, so I can mix and match. I love maxi dresses, and I also often wear short dresses as shirts. I would describe my style as simple but classic. I like plain clothing pieces that can be spiced up with fun, colorful hijabs.

Must haves for me are plain long sleeve undershirts, long sweaters, and many, many hijabs of different colors and designs. I love the color blue, and I find that a lot of my wardrobe is composed of variants of the color.

Top Tip

Buy lots of long sleeved undershirts! You can transform almost any top into a hijab appropriate item. I have worn short sleeved shirts, tank tops, and even tube tops by just adding a long sleeve shirt underneath.

What did you think of Yasmin's style? If you want to be featured on Hijab Style, send in your photos and top tips to hijabstyle @ hotmail . co . uk

Style Inspiration: H&M

Layering Love

These are a couple of photos I took on my phone at the H&M store in Oxford Circus. What caught my eye was of course the creative use of a hijabi essential - lots of layering! Check out the cardigans layered over shirtdresses, long knits over tunics and cropped jackets with dresses; and they've even thrown in headwear into the mix! I love they way the mannequins have been accessorized with long necklaces and scarves too:

Neira's Style Tip

Many of you loved the style tip given by reader Neira, which was to use basic long sleeve tops to make underscarves. This is a great way to recycle old t-shirts; and only using the upper part of the top is ideal for minimising layering underneath tunics which only need more arm coverage. So Neira's made a quick tutorial to show you exactly how to do it:

Muslimah Style: Shamsydar

I'm Shamsydar, a 19-year-old undergrad from Singapore. I've began wearing the hijab full-time a year ago after my A-Levels, because public schools here in Singapore require uniforms to be donned. Though I was unable to wear the hijab to school, I wore it when I wasn't in my school uniform. Now, I love the option of being able to dress up to school even with a hijab on.

My Style

Although I don't think I have a distinct style of my own, my friends would know it was me if they saw a hijabi on the street with sneakers. I wear everything with sneakers, Vans being my favourite as they are comfortable and trendy. I rarely wear heels out even if I have a dress on, because comfort to me is more important than being fashionable. It is not a pleasant sight to see a well-dressed hijabi limping around because of her uncomfortable shoes.

Apart from comfort, I emphasise on colours. I think it is important to dress colourfully because colours influence your moods and feelings. Feeling awesome and looking great will certainly boost your confidence. When choosing the right hijab colour for your outfit, look out for the prints on your outfit. For example, if you have on a black abaya with pink embellishments, put on a pink hijab to complement the outfit. It is also recommended to have on a printed hijab with a plain outfit, and vice versa.

I usually get my outfit inspirations from fashion magazines like TeenVogue, Seventeen as well as from TV shows like Gossip Girl and 90210. I then source out for outfits at Topshop, Dorothy Perkins and OldNavy.com during the sale period because prices are slashed for up to 70 percent. Sometimes, I find cheap steals at flea markets and that would save me a ton of money as well. Here in Singapore, there are many shops that cater to Muslimahs and hijabis from which I buy underscarves and hijabs selling at less than $10 each.

Top Tips

Colours, colours, colours and more colours! Non-hijabis wear their hair differently every day, but hair colour remains the same for a few months. Hijabis have the advantage of changing their 'hair' colour almost everyday! Colours are definitely important for plus-sized hijabis like myself, because colours boost your self-esteem and confidence level. The only black thing in my wardrobe are my abayas, which I wear with coloured hijabs.

Accessories are also important to me. Bracelets, rings and bangles jazz up a dull outfit anytime so it is great to have a few in your jewelery box. Invest in a good-quality bag because it will last you longer.

What did you think of Shamsydar's style? If you want to be featured on Hijab Style, send in your photos and top tips to hijabstyle @ hotmail . co . uk

Hijab Style Alert: Checked Shirts

One high street trend that's emerged over the past few seasons that you can bank on for modesty has to be checked shirts. Whichever shop you walk into, you're bound to almost always find a loose, long version with full sleeves. I was in Uniqlo a few days ago and debating whether to get their red flannel long shirt; but a part of me is still hesitant about the whole 'lumberjack' look! In any case, here are a few more high street finds, including a scarf if like me you haven't yet tried out the shirt version. Don't forget to take the poll at the bottom of this post too to let us know what you think!

Blue check shirtdress £19.99, H&M; check cotton blouse £24.99, Esprit; check dress £34.50, Mango; checked scarf £5.70, Promod.
