Muslimah Style: Muftiah

Reader's Contribution

Muslimah Style: Muftiah

I am a 24 year old student living in Dublin, Ireland.

My Style

I love to look good and unique, yet very Islamic! I try to show people that you can be well covered while wearing your cultural attire with hijab. I love to match my hijabs to the colour of the clothing I am wearing. My favourites are olive, blue, brown and gold.

My favourite items of clothing will have to be abayas and dresses. I don't know exactly why, but I feel and look good in them! In the top right photo, I am wearing a traditional Nigerian fabric called "Adire". It was custom made for me by a dress maker in Nigeria. I bought the hijab to match the outfit at Upton Park Market.

I tend not to stick to one style - it all depends on my mood, the event I am attending and Nigerian culture. I'd say my style is very simple, elegant, classy and chic.

Top Tip

Always have a nice hair do underneath your hijab, it always shows on the face!

This year's Islamic Fashion Festival took place on 25th-26th of May in Jakarta, and featured a range of designers from across Malaysia and Indonesia. I think this year might be my favourite yet! You can see photos from previous seasons here.

Sail into Spring

The nautical trend is always a spring favourite - fresh and fun, you can easily combine stripes with crisp whites, navy and red for a classic style statement. You can also add neutrals like grey and cream to keep things clean and simple. I really like this embroidered tunic with a blue linen skirt; and I've added a cardigan and fun striped flats for a more relaxed outfit:

Sail into Spring

Victory embroidered tunic £40, Warehouse; Eastney skirt £55, Long Tall Sally; navy blue hijab £5.99, Muslim Base; red v neck cardigan £14.99, Uniqlo; double zip slouch shoulder bag £25; striped bow woven border navy pumps £18, both Accessorize.

Designer: Amin Jauhary

Amin Jauhary is a Malaysian fashion designer who collections are influenced by 'contemporary Asia'. He designs casual, evening and bridal wear. I actually prefer his bridal line to the rest, as they seem a lot more hijab-friendly, though could still do with more generous cuts. As with all traditional Malaysian bridal wear, his designs are both colourful and rich in detail:

Abaya Design Awards

I realise this is a bit late, but here's a short video from the CRYSTALLIZED™ Abaya Design Awards at the Abu Dhabi Bride Show, which took place earlier this year. The winner was Mona Osman Ahmed Badawi, who said:

'I intend to make the most of winning this Award and hope to become a fashion designer within the next year. Currently, I am an architect, but when I look at inspiring designers such as Elie Saab, it gives me hope that I too can make my dreams a reality. This Award is helping me to do that.'

Muslimah Style: Finaz

I'm a 24 year old news reporter for TV9 in Malaysia, and also a part time model for Muslimah magazine NUR.

My Style

I love wearing my hijab the way Arab girls do, not so much in the Malaysian style. I like wearing cardigans and jeans with wedge shoes. My favourite items of clothing have to be my hijabs - if I go shopping, hijabs will be my first priority. When it comes to accessories, I like to keep things simple, but if I'm wearing plain shirt, I'll go with long necklace that matches the colour of my hijab. I'm also a big fan of rings, and plenty of colour!

Top Tip

Don't be afraid to be in style! We all have good style, we just need to work on bringing it out. For example, you can imitate styles you see on TV - just hijabize it!

Style Spotlight: Kaftans

There was no shortage this season of long, flowing kaftans on the runways. From simple bolts of bright blue silk at Gucci, to vivid prints and embellishments at Naeem Khan; designers have proven the sheer variety of styles that can be achieved within a simple garment:
