The seventh Islamic Fashion Festival in Jakarta breaks the mould magnificently.
Malaysian designer Datuk Tom Abang Saufi unveils her collection, Lure of Arabia, and I think of an Arabian desert in spring. There are azure skies and scintillating sand amidst the browns and greens of an oasis in the shimmering sheaths she presents.
The other Malaysians at the seventh Islamic Fashion Festival in Jakarta also do our country proud.
Khoon Hooi experiments boldly with Hollywood glamour, and uses pretty flower applique to create a gorgeous spring palette.
Melinda Looi, meanwhile, stays true to her spirit in evoking a natural wantonness while wittily serving up leather in crystal-encrusted butterfly motifs in her Couture 2008/09 Collection.
The renowned designer’s silhouettes remain unmistakable and are swathed in her signature fabrics.
Indonesia’s pride, Sebastian Gunawan, recipient of this year’s Islamic Fashion Festival’s Best Designer Award, proffers light silk, chiffon and jerseys in shades of pale turquoise, deep purple, sunny orange and steel grey.
