DSF Creations Award Winning Design

The Dubai Shopping Festival is currently taking place from January 15th -February 15th. Creations is a signature event of DSF, and the winner of the Creations 2009 Aspiring Designer Award was Shabana Asif with this design:

‘Totally shocked’ and ‘On Top of the World’ is how aspiring designer, Shabana Asif, described her feelings after winning the DSF 2009 Creations Aspiring Designer Award at the Observatory, BurJuman on Friday evening, 30 January. The award is part of the DSF Office initiative to appreciate the efforts of aspiring designers and to make Creations a launch-pad for successful careers in the global fashion industry.

Friday evening unveiled a showcase of single designs from each of the aspiring designers featured during the week of Creations 2009, namely Roxx Couture, Rabia Z, AlyAshmac, Preston University, Mimi Fashion, Tahera Peeran and Shabana Asif. Among VIP guests and media, a fashion jury presented Shabana with the top honour for her stunning metallic silver abaya design, crafted entirely out of one single piece of luxurious fabric.

Read the rest here.

The word 'wearable' isn't exactly the first thing that comes to mind, but this abaya is pretty different to most things available on the market. Although it seems more appropriate for a ladies' party or wedding than outdoors. What do you think of the winning design?

It looks like a bin liner. Horrible.

Salaams Sisters,
Well, i hate to say it, but to me it looks like a designer trash bag..if one could find one big enough to use to make a kaftan...thanks for sharing.

it may look good if is made of different fabric.

Well depending where you are from - I live in the middle East, so I am quite accustomed to seeing the different kinds of Abayas. This doesn't look "horrible" to me as it may to the previous posters - because women do adorn similar types of abayas everyday. I think Kuwaiti abayas are similar to this but obviously less shiny.

World's (hopefully) worst take on the butterfly style. I agree with some of the above posters who thought it was reminiscent of the silvery bin liners.

maybe its the models pose that makes it so horrible, i don't think people walk down the street like that "normally", unless of course they had a mental condition and thougth they had the ability to fly LOL (just kidding, No offense to ANYONE)

I kinda like it. I'll wear it with simple black scarf and I'm good to go ;)

i think it's something diff...
altho yeah it might invites a lots of controversies, however, as a designer, someone should think beyond that...i know, a designer cannot cater for everyone needs or taste, but for me, i like the way the designer challenges everyone else by creating something that can never be imagined by others...n the designer deserves it, of what being original!!
needless to say, pretty or not pretty, u do the judge :)
